2009 and BEYOND!
Robin Strasser signed a contract to play Dorian Lord on ABC's One Life to Live until February, 2009, according to Soap Opera Digest (2.5.08). I am very happy that she will continue in her signature role. I have been a fan of this actress since I was a child. As an adult, I am in a position to find ways of supporting her. About a year ago, I created a page called "Diva for LIFE!" It is meant to be a one-stop webpage where RS fans can email TPTB or a soap magazine, print a postcard or get an address/phone number to otherwise communicate support for Ms. Strasser for 2009 and BEYOND! For more information or to receive "Diva for Life!" updates, CONTACT: rsdivafan@yahoo.com
ABC Daytime President Brian Frons was the one who greenlighted Ms. Strasser's return to OLTL in 2003 after a three-year exile so I can't help but see him as someone likely to support her. Nonetheless, I intend to continue writing to him. More so, I may speculate, is the support she seems to have from her Executive Producer Frank Valentini, who easily seems to appreciate the character of Dorian and too, Ms. Strasser. He is the one who called her in California for her to return to the show and he is the one who stated that he did not view Dorian as a loser.
Valentini: If Dorian didn't think she had a chance with Clint and she kept going for it, she'd be a loser. Dorian's not a loser. She's quite formidable, my Robin. She'll get herself into some nasty little trouble. She can't help herself! That's who she is. -TV Guide, April 2, 2007.
I support Head Writer Ron Carlivati in what he has done for OLTL in recapturing the essence of the characters and balancing the show's new players with it's veterans (SON, Episode Count-January). He also has brought an element of surprise to the show, interwoven stories, and given nods to history. In short, he writes as though he is a fan of the show, which he has already stated was the case.
Dorian has been featured in several stories that show us her humanity such as the story with her becoming a foster parent to Langston Wilde and the one about Addie's sudden reversal in mental state. I like the way Mr. Carlivati is writing the storyline with Charlie. Dorian is not just being duplictious in separating Charlie and Viki and in keeping it a secret that Jared is Charlie's son; we also see that she is caring toward Charlie as an alcoholic because of the similarities to her late husband Mel Hayes. The use of history and a logical tie-in, added layers and substance to the scenes with Charlie and Dorian. I will leave it up to the creative vision of Mr. Carlvati as to what story he tells for Dorian, BUT it is extremely important to me that the following be taken into consideration:
-
Ms. Strasser, a lead actress on OLTL, should be given meaty stories that convey substance. What is happening in Dorian's relationship with Langston? Why did Dorian feel so strongly that she wanted to be her foster mother? Is she going to adopt her?
-
If there is to be humor, let there be irony.
-
If Dorian is engaged in a scheme, let the motivation slowly reveal itself. Dorian should always be mysterious and keep viewers guessing, but the writer shouldn't forget there has to be a reason behind the deed that is true to the heart of the character and not just an act to show she can be mean, petty and misguided.
-
I like the focus on the Cramer family. I want to see connections to the history. Having Addie involved on the show has me intrigued. Will she revert to behaviors of the past in tormenting Dorian?
-
A Diva needs to be actively engaged in a career. In this way, Dorian is more of a dealer, a powerbroker. Let me see her at Craze.
- Romance. Give Dorian a love interest but take some time in telling the story. Dorian's life should be about more than her "girls" or even a career. She is a dynamic Diva!
If you look at the DIVA board, it is plain to see that I have been a avid viewer and fan of the character of Dorian for many years. She is the main reason I watch OLTL. While supporting Ms. Strasser for a contract for 2009 and beyond, I am going to also focus on what 2008 has in store for her character. The Writers Strike can't be over soon enough! Viva la Diva! Diva for LIFE!
