A Romance to Remember

elevator031_0001.jpgRight now I am bowing to a classic and a memory I won't forget. The love affair between Dorian Cramer Lord and Herb Callison is my all-time favorite romance on OLTL. Herb and Dorian were married for four years (1981-1985). I was with them every step of the way. The marriage didn't start out being one of love so much as prestige for Dorian and one of political ambition for Herb.  Nonetheless, their testy alliance forged into a love match.

The Featured Video of the Month for Dorian Video Clips at the Official Website of Robin Strasser  is "Dorian and Herb in the Elevator."  Fresh from a divorce, the duo find themselves trapped in a stalled elevator at the courthouse when Dorian's claustrophobia kicks in. What's a man like Herb to do?

I so remember that episode when it first aired. Before the popular use of DVRs, I had to rely on viewing in real-time so that meant rushing home from school to avoid missing anything. I just couldn't believe my favorite couple would end it all. (Shakes head.) Each time Dorian and Herb fought they would always passionately make up. I just figured it would happen again.

I was nervous at watching the show and very upset when Herb and Dorian exited through the courthouse doors with their attorneys.  They were talking about the divorce being final. I was so sad and I hung on every word. With their utterance was an expression of hurt, regret, bittersweetness, a tinge of anger and vulnerability. Lies were at the bottom of the split but there was love.

As they entered the elevator, I so wanted them to change their minds. Dorian was always unpredictable and anything was possible, even turning around and changing their minds about a dissolved union. And then... it happened. The lights went out. Dorian started panicking, yelling. Herb seemed at a loss as to how to help her, comfort her. Dorian pressed her nose to the crack in the elevator doors for air. It was tense and compelling. Herb moved close to his ex-wife, caressed her and whispered soothing words into her ear. Then they found themselves in each other's arms. I recall being in shock. I couldn't believe what was happening.

elevator070_0001.jpgI am not sure if I can articulate what about the scenes commits them to such fond memory. Perhaps it was the surprise and the tenderness. I didn't expect what occurred. I will never forget afterwards a lonely and distraught Herb went to Wanda's Diner while a numb and defensive Dorian returned to her penthouse and lied to boring boyfriend Harry O'Neil about how she'd spent her evening. There just seemed to be no soap justice as I yearned for Dorian and Herb to reunite for years. It never happened. Instead, I am thankful for the video tape I received from Ginny, aka LovestheDrama, whom I met on an email list of "Adorians"--Dorian fans.

I'd like to salute those who worked behind the scenes to put together an archive of video clips of Robin Strasser's work where I can enjoy these scenes from the past forever more. I was delighted to read the Backstage Banter  featured at the Official Website of Robin Strasser, too. It was just plain fun to read how these scenes were creatively constructed by these talented performers, the director, etc. Readers also find out what Tony Call, who played Herb, is up to these days and about the off-camera relationship between the featured stars. The Backstage Banter is an intriguing read. So, after you finish watching the video clip, be sure to stop and read what Ms. Strasser and Mr. Call have to say in an exclusive chat.
