Clint Buchanan is the eldest of Asa Buchanan’s children. He was his father’s pride and his mother’s joy. His father groomed him to work in the oil fields and take over his empire. His mother, a French beauty described as delicate and needy, Olympia, taught him her love of animals and compassionate nature. But his idyllic childhood was painfully brief. His mother, lonely from all of Asa’s work and women related absences, began a passionate affair with Yancy Ralston, a hand on the family ranch in Sweetwater. Asa, certain that younger brother Bo was Yancy’s and furious with Olympia, banished her from their young sons lives and told the boys their mother had died.
Clint grew up with Rosa Vasquez, the family’s Mexican cook, as his mother figure from then on. Rosa had a beautiful daughter named Maria and when the kids were 15, they fell in love. Clint, being a Buchanan, got Maria pregnant and Asa was livid. He sent Clint off to deal with an oil field, hushed up the pregnancy and sent Maria and her mother off to unknown parts to spare Clint the “burden” of raising a Mexican child and being saddled by an unworthy wife. Clint returned home unaware that Maria was pregnant but soon learned that Asa had sent his love away. He was furious and left his father’s home, disowning Asa and abandoning Bo.
Bo, Asa, Clint
Clint ,a determined young man ,worked his way through college and met up with a man who would change his life. Joe Riley taught Clint the newspaper business and helped him gain control of a newspaper shortly after he graduated. Clint was an up and coming name in journalism, running his paper and making his own fortune. Joe called on his friend for a favor and Clint beholden to his mentor came to Llanview, Pa. Joe asked Clint to run his wife’s newspaper for him. Joe confided in the younger man that he was dying and his pregnant wife could not handle the burden alone. Clint was devastated. He loved Joe like the father Asa had never been to him. He agreed but immediately butted heads with Joe’s opinionated wife, Viki. (For those of you who don’t know this Lee Patterson and Phil Carey are the same ages! Funny storyline twist there)
Clint and Dorian
Soon after coming to town, Clint began an affair with Pat Ashley but after her sister Maggie tried to kill her, Pat was devastated and broke it off with him. Shortly thereafter, Clint hooked up with Dorian Lord. Dorian, the beautiful widow of Victor and Viki’s arch nemesis, had a brief passionate affair with Clint but Clint couldn’t handle Dorian’s penchant for scheming and bending the truth. Dorian couldn’t tolerate his rigid sense of right and wrong. So the affair abruptly ended. In the meantime, Asa and Bo tracked down Clint with a little help from a lost letter from Joe. Clint was thrilled to be reunited with Bo but rejected Asa. Asa older and wiser begged his son to let him back into his life. Clint eventually relented but continued to refuse Asa’s pleas to come to Buchanan Enterprises. He would be a son to his father and a brother but he would not give Asa the satisfaction of taking over his empire. Brother Bo was the dutiful son but that soon disintegrated as well.
Clint and Viki continued working at the Banner together and through the long hours and his time as surrogate father to Kevin and Joey they fell in love. But Ted Clayton and his ne’er-do-well daughter Tina came to town and Ted plotted to control Viki and her fortune. He was using drugs to poison her and win her affections. Clint figured it all out and saved Viki killing Ted in the process. Viki was so upset by the whole thing, she rejected Clint. He was devastated and quit the Banner, moving over to her newspaper competition the Chronicle. Edwina Lewis and Clint began an affair and Viki came to realize she was wrong to shut him out of her life.
Viki was arrested for refusing to reveal a source. Despite their differences Clint took over keeping the boys and taking care of everything Viki needed. She admitted she loved him and they were married shortly after her release. Clint gave up the Chronicle, sold The Stars and Stripes and moved into her beloved home after evicting Dorian with the help of a rubber snake. The marriage was idyllic as Clint adopted Joe’s boys, convincing his father that biology meant nothing and a woman with children was indeed what he wanted.

Asa planned to marry the much younger and beautiful Samantha Vernon. Unbeknownst to Clint, Bo and Asa Olympia had come to claim her family. The years away had changed her and she was not only angry but very unbalanced. She became fast friends with Pat Ashley and Bo who did not remember her. Olympia made a point of avoiding Clint as she knew he would recognize her. Tragically Asa found her, locked her in her mansion and she was able to hatch a plot to kill him on his wedding day. But Samantha protected him, killing Olympia. Clint was devastated; his mother had connected with Bo but hadn’t come to him. He would have helped her, protected her from Asa’s wrath but he and Bo were never given the chance. Viki consoled him and he tried to refocus himself for Viki and the boys.
Clint and Echo DiSavoy
Soon Echo Di Savoy came to town with her brother Giles. They had a plan to destroy Clint Buchanan. He had an affair with their mother Giselle back when he was in school and they blamed him for her death in a fire. Clint fell under Echo’s spell as she ingratiated herself into Clint and Viki’s life. Eventually he made the colossal mistake of having a one night stand with the lovely Echo. Clint rushed home to confess to Viki and beg for her forgiveness but Echo had beaten him and told her. Kevin heard his parents arguing about Clint leaving and was devastated. He adored Clint and ran away rather than lose another father. Clint found the little guy asleep in the garden after an exhaustive search and Kevin begged his Daddy not to leave him. Viki heard the pleas and Clint’s explanation about how he had made a terrible mistake but that he loved him and Joey more than anything and would never leave them. Viki decided everyone deserved a second chance and they reconciled.
Tina Clayton came back to town bringing the plague with her. A plague named Mitch Lawrence. They discovered that Tina was Irene and Victor’s bastard daughter and if Viki reverted to Niki then Tina would inherit Llanfair according to Victor’s will. Viki was working on putting together a 30th edition of the Banner to honor Victor. She was working a lot and discovering many lost letters and articles about Victor. As always it put a strain on her. Tina came forward and showed Viki their father’s letters in which he acknowledged that she was his child. Viki went crazy and declared that her father was a good man and that he was not a pervert that with Viki’s young friend. She pondered that her friend, Irene, wasn’t even 18 then so it just couldn’t be true. Clint tried to calm her and took the letters to handwriting experts. That and blood tests indicated that Tina was indeed Victor’s daughter from Irene. Viki snapped.She let Niki Smith out to play. Niki fell in love with Harry O’Neill, who was seeing Dorian. Harry also happened to be the father of Bo’s love Dee Dee O’Neill.
Eventually Viki recognized Niki was back and enlisted Jenny Renaldi in helping her to keep it all a secret. Jenny, a nurse, kept coming up with lies and excuses to help Viki explain to Clint about her long absences. Clint was certain she was having an affair and begged her to tell the truth like he had with Echo. But she refused and continued lying in hopes that she could just make Niki go away. Dorian figured it all out and would not be kept quiet. She confronted Viki and told Clint everything. Clint was heartbroken and very confused. Dorian pressed him to get her help. Mitch and Tina hatched a plot to kill Clint. They were in big trouble now as once Clint knew about Niki, they knew they wouldn’t have free access to her anymore. Tina got cold feet and tried to protect Clint. Harry O’Neill arrived and a drugged Niki Smith, who witnessed Mitch killing Harry. Viki came to with Clint by her side and Harry dead at her feet.
A long battle ensued for Viki’s mental health. Niki Smith just wanted to have fun, party, sleep around and get away from Llanfair. Tina became fast friends with her. Tina plotted to convince Clint that in some altered state,he'd slept with her and she was pregnant with his child. Clint had been rejected by Niki, who was masquerading as Viki. Finally when Tina started blackmailing him to marry her, he figured the whole thing out. Niki divorced Clint and he discovered Tina was never pregnant. At that point, he set out to win Viki back from Niki. He courted Niki and she admitted to falling in love with him. Viki grew stronger and started taunting Niki by telling her Clint only wanted her. Soon he was able to recreate a moment with himself and Tina and Niki/Viki walked in just as she had walked in on Victor and Irene and also Clint and Tina earlier. Viki was so shocked, she came back and Clint and Viki were joyfully reunited.
